Top Ten Tools for Writing Humor

Ever want to write a funny book or a humor column? Or add spice to your newsletter editor or web page so that people read beyond the typical drivel that sends otherwise eager-to-spend customers into a boredom-induced coma?

Here are my top ten favorite humor tools for you, along with real live examples from my own humor column.

Threading a theme through the text.

Are you into practical jokes? Try sewing a single thread of bright red wool across Uncle Henry's new green golf shirt. Or sew a thread through your text.

My Parenting Pumpkin Cheesecake Recipe is actually a delicious recipe. But I assumed there is a little helper around, and I threaded her through the text, making for sort of a running gag.

OK, time to up-tempo the laughs. Mid-way through, I run a second thread, renaming the cake with each mistake. The thread within a thread multiplies the humor.

See http://thehappyguy.com/pumpkin-cheesecake-recipe.html

Contrast what should be with the obviously deficient reality

I use this technique in Home Of The Year. Most people will agree that a home is more than just a house.

I contrast the reality of my I-survived-the-hurricane home with the Martha Stewart image of how a home should look -- the old little-miss-perfect Martha Stewart image, not the new-and-not-improved, scandal-defying, corporate shark image.

Notice I also use the threading tool in this piece – the drawings on the wall -- and bring it together at the end to reinforce the main point.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/home-of-the-year.html.

Build on a ridiculous notion

Consultants call this thinking outside the box and charge you for it. I call it humor and give it to you for free.

I had a bad hairdresser day. I held my hairdresser accountable for my thinning hair, a ludicrous idea that works.

Let's up-tempo the laughs. Mid-way through, I compound the humor with another ludicrous notion: growth formula making my scalp taller rather than my hair thinner.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/hairdresser.html .

Mock a public figure

This is possibly the easiest humor tool to use. Public figures are just so mockable. They naturally rise to their own level of mockability. I wrote a column mocking Michael Jackson – and the media's over-fascination with his arrest. That was one of my worst columns, so I won't show it to you. Hey, I said it was easy, not funny.

Don't see.

Act like a clown

I start off my Vulture column, based on a true news story, by playing the fool, saying silly things and displaying a general ignorance. This gives my uncle the opportunity to set me straight. In classic Laurel and Hardy style, the straight man makes the comedian funny.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/humor-vulture-value.html .

By the way, this also allows a humorist to be funny on touchy subjects, without offending.

The heckler

I love to inject a heckler into an already silly situation. I applied a news story about a law suit over cow hormones to my "New York Times best seller". It was actually a bit like mocking a public figure, but what made this column exceptional is how Ruby Red kept interjecting her own slightly out-of-context comments into what was already a silly situation.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/best-seller.html .

Give human characteristics to non-humans

This is a great tool for laughing at human foibles. It is at the very heart of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons. I offered leadership lessons from six penguins who were helping the other penguins live up to their full "penguinhood". This is also based on a news story, although some of the penguin dialogue had to be contrived.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/penguin-leadership.html .

Build laughs upon laugh

My favorite column is where I try so hard to be a giver, but everybody makes me out to be a taker. I start with the simple premise that givers sleep better at night.

The whole column is a play on words, but what makes it one of my best is how I react to people calling me a taker. You can feel the desperation, and almost picture me running away in horror. This is the same tool every stand-up comedian uses; as your laughter subsides, a new punch line builds on the previous one.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/give-sleep.html .

Give funny names to things

I itemized a whole series of customer service styles. One of them was "do-it-yourself extortion". Need I say more?

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/customer-service.html .

Funny faces and weird sounds.

"Oh no, waa-aah ... boom ... ouch! ... bump ... yikes! ... crash." "Bhrhrthrpt." Those are just two of the sound effects I use to describe extreme fatigue. Words or not-quite-in-the-dictionary sounds can paint a pretty funny picture.

See http://www.thehappyguy.com/extreme-fatigue.html .

There are many other well-known humor tools available, such as exaggeration, playing deaf, reversing roles and throwing cream pies. If you figure out how to do that last classic in a humor column, please let me know how.

Three Reasons Why A Good Looking Website Will Increase Traffic

If you really want to increase traffic on your website, you may want to step back and take a look at the site from a visitors point of view. A good looking website increases its traffic naturally because those who visit it will likely come back and tell their friends about it as well. The presentation of your website says a lot about your business.

If you want to have a highly successful web business then it is necessary to have a nice website. With more than half of the world logging in web time each week, it is important for todays businesses to maintain interesting and effective websites that pertain to their businesses. If you are interested in learning why a good looking website is important when trying to increase traffic, take a look at these three reasons.

Professionalism

The first view of your website by a visitor says a lot about your business as a whole. If your website looks cheap and self-made, then it is likely the visitor will not think your business operates in a professional manner. When it comes to dealing with customers on the web, you certainly want to look professional on all levels. If you are an online retailer, you want customers to feel comfortable ordering from you. If they do not think your website looks professional, they may not feel comfortable doing so. It is not necessary to have your website professionally created in order to appear professional.

All you need to do is play around with different approaches to see which templates work best for your business. The more you read and learn about website creation, the better your site will look. Educating yourself on the issue of website development is important when you are trying to do it on your own. If you find yourself overwhelmed, then you can always turn to a professional for the creation of your site. Therefore, to maintain a high level of professionalism, you need to have a good looking website. In turn, but creating the professional atmosphere, the consumers will likely return and bring their friends as well.

Entertaining

Not only should your website look professional, but it should also have an entertaining value. Entertainment is something that will draw visitors into your site in a deeper way. If they see an interesting link, they will likely examine your site in more detail. By offering things like contests and free giveaways, you can easily draw in more traffic. If your site is boring however, it is unlikely you will be able to keep anyone there for more than two seconds.

Offering games to play on your site that may pertain to your business, you can keep the traffic flowing. You can even offer links to other exciting and informative websites, in order to act as an in-between for the fun. Anyone would rather visit a fun and entertaining site than a boring and plain website. If you offer enough excitement it is likely the regular visitors will advertise your site to everyone they know!

Easy On the Eyes

A good looking website will also increase traffic if it is easy on the eyes. In addition to being professional and fun, your website should be easy on the eyes. This essentially means that it should be attractive as well as easy to function within. Choose colors and an arrangement that will appeal to a wide variety of people. Using really bold colors will possibly hurt the eyes of viewers if they look at them for extended periods of time. You can always add splashes of colors in graphics and borders, but it is best to keep text in dark colors. Create an interesting layout, but not one that is so unique that it is difficult to use. If your website is easy to look at and visitors can navigate easily around it, they will want to come back.

If you focus on these three reasons to create a good looking website, your traffic will surely increase. Having a website that looks professional, entertaining, and is easy on the eyes is the key to inviting and maintaining web traffic for your website. So, if you are creating your site now, or if you want to overhaul your existing site, keep these three tips in mind to get the most traffic to your site as possible.

"What Makes Network Marketing Good?" #1. Terry's Story.

Flexibility. E.g., A chance missed for a newly discarded gal of 63, whose story follows below, to have built up something for herself, from home. But it's never too late...

Story.

"I was stunned and devastated when, on our 40th wedding anniversary, my husband presented me with a divorce."

In a wonderful piece entitled Paradise Lost (Domestic Division) (NY Times Jan 1, 2006) Terry Martin Hekker describes how her entire belief system came undone on that day. It was particularly embarrassing and shocking to her because, it so happened that 25 years ago, she wrote an Op-Ed article for the same paper, on the satisfaction of being a full-time housewife. She was convinced that homemaking and raising her children was the most challenging and rewarding job she could ever want.

She had written that she came from a "long line of women, most more Edith Bunker than Betty Friedan, who never knew they were unfulfilled...they took pride in a clean, comfortable home and satisfaction in serving a good meal because no one had explained that the only work worth doing is that for which you were paid."

In subsequent years she lectured across the U.S., appeared on the "Today" show and told her story of why she thought her choice was a valid one. But that was back then.

Today, she writes that after talking to a few other discarded wives after long years of marriage, that "we had a lot in common with our outdated kitchen appliances. Like them, we were serviceable, low maintenance, front loading, self-cleaning and (relatively) frost free. Also, like them we had warranties that had run out. Our husbands sought sleeker models with features we lacked who could execute tasks we'd either never learned or couldn't perform without laughing."

"Like most loyal wives of our generation, we'd contemplated eventual widowhood, but never thought we'd end up divorced."

And she adds, "And divorced doesn't begin to describe the pain of this process. 'Cancelled' is more like it. It began with my credit cards, then my health insurance and checkbook, until, finally, like a used postage stamp, I felt cancelled, too."

And the injustice she felt?

"He got to take his girlfriend to Cancun, while I got to sell my engagement ring to pay the roofer. When I filed my first nonjoint tax return, it triggered the shocking notification that I had become eligible for food stamps."

She notes that she got alimony but that the amount was less than she was used to getting for household expenses, and that she had to use that money to pay bills.

Bills "I'd never seen before: mortgage, taxes, insurance and car payments. And that princely sum was awarded for only four years, the judge suggesting that I go for job training when I turned 67."

"Not only was I unprepared for divorce itself, I was utterly lacking in skills to deal with the brutal aftermath."

Today, she writes, that she worries and wonders about the young mothers of today, "educated, employed, self-sufficient" who drop out of the work force when they have children. "Maybe they'll be fine." But "The fragility of modern marriage suggests that at least half of them may not be."

Back to the question: What makes Network Marketing good?

#1: Flexibility. In case.

Post script to Terry's story.

If she had it to do over again, Terry writes:

"I'd still marry the man I married and have my children...they are my treasure...But I would have used the years after my youngest started school to further my education. I could have amassed two doctorates using the time and energy I gave to charitable and community causes and been better able to support myself."

However, what if she had known about a good company with a good product line she used and loved herself? With the flexibility of time and income of NM, Terry could also have maybe amassed 50 or 100 customers every year for those 20 years. And be earning a bit from all of them over that time, and today.

What if she had taken those 5-10 hours a week, for 20 years, and maybe got 100 customers per year? That'd have resulted in 2000 customers after the 20 years she describes.

A $5/mo profit on each one today would be a good sum to have coming in each month, wouldn't it?

Flexibility. To build something part time from home when you're lucky enough to be supported by a mate during those years, or you have another job. After all, it's not just being "discarded" that the income will come in handy, but also if the mate remains and needs your help. Or if you just want to take a year off.

That, in my opion, might be a better option for many women than a couple of doctorates which, by themselves guarantee no income. Customers and a few resellers, however, represent regular monthly income.

Do you know someone like Terry? There are ways to do things with this business, yes even now, at 63. And what about all those younger women still raising their family, or contemplating having one? Have you asked them what THEY are you doing NOW, for themselves, to plan for their "what if"? Show them Terry's story. They probably have their own from THEIR families.

After all, most discarded but loyal wives had no clue that shock was coming, especially after all those years. That's a pretty big and well defined audience, think, ladies?

Improved Page Engine Rank and SEO for Beginners and the More Experienced

Improved page engine rank is a term used by those with a confusion with SEO and page optimization and Google Page Rank – properly PageRank by the way. It is a trade marked term registered by Google, although the patent for the PageRank system of calculating and assigning it is assigned to Stanford University where Page developed the system, not Google.

What most people do not know is that the term PageRank originates from the name of one of the developers, Larry Page. Hence Page Rank. He later teamed up with Sergey Brin to form Google in 1998.

Enough of history: that is in the past! The present is that Google PageRank that I will henceforth refer to as Page Rank for fear of breaking copyright law, has been publicly stated by Google as being one of the predominant means of determining the listing of a website for a particular search term. This might not last for a lot longer, since there are whispers that Google are considering reducing the importance of Page Rank in view of the increasing relevance of social bookmarking and other social sites such as Del.icio.us and Digg.

Now there is Twitter run by Google, and more and more Twitter results are turning up in Google search results. Twitter is what is called a micro-blogging service that uses SMS and instant messaging, or the blog posts on the Twitter website. Facebook is also being used by more and more people, but a lot are college students and others trying to spy on and stalk ex lovers for what can only be assumed to be pretty nefarious reasons.

However, these uses of so called social networking sites are immaterial. It their existence that matters, and the association many of them have with major search engines that are producing so many search results somewhat less than useful when they should properly have been filtered out. The question is: Should Google and Yahoo be allowed to be associated with these sites and give them preference in search engine results by use of what can only be manipulation of the algorithms?

Perhaps Page Rank and Link Density will become less important than your registration and participation in these sites. That is why I have joined most of them. They are fun to participate in, but much of the content is very juvenile and amateurish and not what I would to find in a serious search. Blog postings are generally not useful content.

However, back to link density and Page Rank. It is highly unlikely that link density will ever be dropped by Google, but they might introduce some aspects of social bookmarking in to their algorithm. What this means is that if you want to improve your listing, you will have to be involved in Google related social sites, Twitter being the main one at the moment.

If you understand Twitter you will know what I mean when I state that Google might include, in addition to page rank and traditional SEO, the number of friends and comments, number of Twitter followers, photo uploads and frequency of updates. Keep an eye on Google activity and their acquisitions, since the more acquisitions of social sites Google make, and the more of their own they produce, then you can be pretty sure that at some time they will introduce elements of that into their algorithms.

So, get ahead of the race and get acquainted with Twitter. Google have made no changes yet, but the buzz is there, so don’t bet your boots that no changes will be made in that direction sometime in the future. My belief is that article submission will remain the one major means of attracting traffic and obtaining one-way links back to your selected web pages for the foreseeable future, but that elements of social bookmarking and other social networking sites will gradually creep into the algorithms.

There is nothing to lose by being ahead in the game, and you have just been given a clue as to how to do that. It might be a year away, perhaps less and perhaps more, but when the day comes, if it does, I at least will be prepared for it.

Your Key To High Search Engine Placement: Links

One thing has become abundantly clear in today's Internet: you need to place well in the search engines if you want to succeed with your online business. Every search engine ranks pages based on slightly different criteria, but one that is consistently critical is the number of incoming links lead to your page.

Google especially focused its original algorithms on these links. Their idea was that if your page has lots of incoming links from pages in or related to your keyword topic, and if those links originated from good or prestigious pages, this was an indicator that your page was likely to hold the information that their search engine customers were seeking. Rankings were based on the number of incoming links a given page had.

Today, Google works on the same concept, but they've grown increasingly sophisticated to serve their customers better. For instance, when affiliate marketers figured out that Google was using linking to drive search engine placement, they started building automated link-generating sites that cross-referenced one another through complex linking arrays. This quickly became known as search engine spam.

How Can You Use Links?

First, never spam Google. They may blackball all your sites and your name if they think you've done something contrary to their terms of use. Instead, focus on how you can get good quality links from other pages to your website.

Great Content: Great content, once the word gets out, will always draw links from other sites to you. If you have a fantastic tool or resource to share, putting it online can draw links and ultimately traffic.

Links From Directories: Yahoo! and Dmoz are well-known directory sites; instead of cataloging pages via web spiders, these directories have you or an editor place your site into an appropriate category, from which your link will emerge. Always register your site with directories yourself so you can select a category appropriate to your keywords. Don't overlook niche directories, either; whether your website is focused on pets or datachips, there are small specialized directories out there you can register with. Note: register with free directories first, and when you see where your site's going to fall in the search engine you can start looking at the paid ones.

Links from Related Forums: If you post in a forum related to your website topic, always include a link back to your website; the spiders pick up these links and, when they're from related forums, it will boost your website's ranking.

Reciprocal Links: Historically, these have been great, a sort of tit-for-tat web marketing scheme. Lately, after the latest update on Google , they've been reduce in importance, though they are still valuable.

Article Sites: There are numerous websites that distribute free donated articles written by experts. If you write good articles, you can contribute articles to these sites. The benefit? Each article is printed on content-rich sites with a resource box that has your name and a link to your website in it. This provides you with an automatic one-way link from a quality site.

Blogs: Blogs are a little different, in that they don't necessarily give you one-way links. What they do is provide your site with continually fresh content – an online commodity that the search engines love. With good one-way links and fresh content, you can raise your search engine rankings quickly.

Search Engine Optimization And Reciprocal Linking

Search Engine Optimization

I believe linking is dead!

Google do not count your links like they used too, fact!

I make this claim from personal experience. My website used to have many back links from other websites, now Google only list 19 and some of these are internal links.

I get at least 50 web site owners, or designers a week, asking for a link to their site from mine. Me being the affable chap that I am I usually give them a link. I do however expect one in return, fair enough you might say. If that is the case and all these websites link to mine where the are they?

Yahoo show my links to be 1,735 sites linking to me. I know, some will be internal links.

MSN show me as having 877.

Great you might think, so why do Google only show 19. I know I have many well ranked links coming from relevant sites in the same field as my own site, but the Google does not see them as relevant. Why I ask?

Are Google now discounting links that have been there for some time? EG. aged links.

Are Google discounting all reciprocal links?

Do links only count if you don't link to them? E.G. one way links. If so how does one get links from well ranked sites?

Well I can probably answer that, you are expected to buy them.

Therefore Google have created another spin off business for certain people in the world. I don't agree with buying links, people should rate your site well enough to link to you. If you have a rubbish website and can buy links to improve your ranking then the whole thing stinks. I have never purchased links, in fact I have never even asked anyone for a link. The only way I get links is by people asking me.

The little guy on the web has little chance of getting a high ranking in Google.

When I first put my website together Google gave me a PR6, this was before they had things like the sandbox. I had very few, if any, sites linking to mine, I was a newbie on the web, not to my business I might add. I used to work for another company doing SEO but thought why am I working for someone else, and set up on my own. However I digress, my point being I had few links and Google and all the other search engines ranked my site highly. I know good content and all that, but about a year ago I went down to a PR5 with lots of links, get the picture. Now from Google my site is only a PR4. There seems to be no logic at all to Google, which is probably what they are striving for.

For some of my search phrases I get position one from 20,000,000 pages but I have not even optimised for those phrases. With no links going to that page. It is starting to appear that the more you optimise the worse it gets. The more links you have the worse it gets.

Whereas everyone in my industry, and at Google, says linking is one of the most important things, I genuinely do not believe this is the case anymore unless you can get links from very high PR sites. They are somehow filtering out the links, even relevant ones.

I know I have some irrelevant links coming to and from my website but I just like to help other website owners. It takes me a couple of hours a week to add other peoples links to my site and I wondering if it is all worth it anymore. Why should I spend my valuable time putting links on my site, emailing people to say where their link is all for Google to discount them. So from now I am no longer adding anymore links from my site.

The Changing Face of Search Engine Optimization

With the ever evolving internet market for just about anything you can imagine and Google’s index growing to almost 9 billion pages, and counting, there is little dispute amongst search engine optimizers that our job is getting much harder. From linking to articles, and density to ontology, our industry changes as fast as any other. The search engines, especially Google, seem to be on a daily diet of change and their algorithm seems to be growing at the rate of their index.

The word ‘related’ plays a much bigger part in SEO today than it ever has in the past. Instead of targeting an exact keyword phrase, it now makes a lot more sense to keep your site within context and to have related words to your keywords, compared to having density of one keyword phrase. Linking has also turned into a frenzy for relevancy. Unrelated links seem to no longer carry much weight at all. The theme through all of Google’s recent changes seems to come down to one cliché: quality over quantity.

Just like with any other update at Google, optimizers must search and research their profession, however it seems to be happening more often than ever. You can’t walk through our office without hearing Google’s name a thousand times. We have unofficial RND (research and development) meetings almost every hour as there seems to constantly be new ideas and theories popping into all of our heads. In the past there were always changes to the way we’ve done our work, but the pace of this change is accelerating rapidly as well as the competition for online searchers.

MSN seems to be creating a buzz and they’ve just recently started a national television ad campaign. Their search results resemble Google’s of 6 months ago, a time that will go down in SEO history as “the good old days”, and also a time that Google’s SERPs seemed a lot more relevant than they do today. New search engines seem to be popping up all over the place, and after all, wasn’t Google a virtual unknown 5 years ago?

One of the best points made to me over the past month came at the preview of the new become.com search engine in California, where founder Michael Yang decreed this to be only the very beginning in the history of online search. Whatever happens in Google’s future, and the future of online search, there is one thing for certain: only the most intelligent and innovative of SEO companies are going to stay above the bar and continue to find ways to get their clients, and themselves, to the top.

Your Link Building Campaign Search for Quality or Search for Quantity?

If you’re new to internet marketing, one tip you may have heard around the internet is that quantity link building is a better campaign than quality link building. However, if you’ve been around the internet awhile you know that a good link building campaign is just the opposite. While it is important to get a good number of links pointing back to you, the quality of the link pointing back is much more vital.

The way to look at it is that a link is like a reference to your website. If you were collecting references for another job, would you try to collect 25 good references or a few really good references? It’s the same thing for your link building campaign. You want nothing but the best pointing back to your website.

Not only is it a waste of your time to get as many links as possible as oppose to focusing on quality link building, it can also be detrimental to your website. If you have hundreds of links of little value pointing to your website, the search engines may view your website as one with little value. Obviously there are a number of other considerations that search engines take into account, but the links pointing back to your website is certainly one of the criteria.

So how do you know if it is a quality link or not? There are a number of factors that you should take into consideration when starting your link building campaign. One of the most common factors is the link’s page rank. This is a great way to look for quality links because their page is ranked from the search engines. However, you want to look at the page rank of the page that your website will be on, not their home page. It does you no good to look at the page rank of their home page if your link will have no association to it.

Another consideration is how many links are already on the other person’s page. Most people set up a page specifically for links to other websites. It can be difficult at times, but during your link building campaigns you should try to find websites that have no more than 30 links on the page. The page rank for any given page is distributed among the number of links on the page. If you can find a page with 30 other links on it, you will receive 1/30th of the page rank for that page.

The last thing to consider during your link building campaign is whether you like the website or not. Just because a website doesn’t have the highest page rank doesn’t automatically make it a poor website. For all you know it could be a brand new website that will soon have a page rank of 6. The important thing is that you go with your gut instinct and base your link building campaign around quality links and not the quantity of links.

Is It Really Difficult To Become An Internet Entrepreneur?

Today breaking into the Internet market can be harder than it used to be, excess of resources is confusing, you have the daunting task of deciding where to get the training from. What happens is that you visit web sites on this subject and when you decide to subscribe the newsletters that they provide, you may start to gather good information about it.

Since every marketer, seo expert or guru, while is giving you good help, is at the same time trying to sell a course, a membership or whatever is up promoting. As a result you may end up signed in a lot of newsletters and programs and while you can learn a lot from them, you may have problems to concentrate in what is really useful for you, according to your level of expertise.

The gurus have an arsenal of products to show you, from programs that spy the AdWord adds that make the more money, to universities online that promise you to became the next SEO expert just overnight, some of this programs claim you can make even in you first month online, ten thousand dollars or more of profit, disregarding your skills and the level of knowledge you have.

The most important thing to do, at the beginning of your carrier as an Internet publisher, or as an Internet marketer, is to decide the field you want to specialize, maybe later on you may want to switch and broad up you knowledge, but at list when you start, you need to be focused on one area and avoid getting confused and perhaps ending up doing nothing.

What ever is your decision, in terms of what you want to become involved at first, you should buy a book and start to learn HTML, yes, the hard way... Usually is not that hard to learn and there is plenty of resources online about learning HTML. The gurus usually skim on this advice because it is not as appealing as it is to tell you that in a weak you will be rich, but when it will come to validate your web site with the w3c.org what will you do to correct the code?

Nothing come with little effort in this life, so, if you are intentioned to start your own online business, you have to be willing to put some effort into it. The battle for the first pages of the search engines is fierce, you have to be able to create your sites with your own content, fresh content is nowadays an important part of the search engine game.

You have to start to write your very own good content, in order to be successful in the Internet and consider that the search engine will reward much more your original content, instead of the same thing cooked over and over again.

So if it was really possible to make ten thousand dollars for a beginner, the people like me that have been trying to make a living online and after two or tree years still make four figure incomes are definitely dumb, or maybe is more that is just a way to promote some silly scheme that promises to make you rich overnight.

10 Useful Tips To Attract People To Your Web Site And Keep Them Coming Back

Combinations of two or more of the tips below are being used by many successful sites today. Use your imagination and see what you can do with them. Because there are so many web sites on the internet today visitors are spread quite thinly and web traffic is one of the scarcest commodities on the internet today. Without it your online business does not exist.

1. You could give people a free subscription to your newsletter. Almost everyone is publishing a newsletter nowadays so it is important to give something extra with the free subscription. You need to set yourself apart from the other internet marketers out there. This might be done by offering a gift or free advertising when people subscribe.

2. Provide your visitors with new and original content. Your content will be more attractive to your visitors if it is up-to-date or original. You could also offer people the option to reprint the content in their newsletter or web site. You will need to change your content frequently if you do this. But the benefits are worth the effort. The search engines will love your site and keep coming back. Your site will rank highly in their results and your visitors will keep coming back for the latest updates.

3. Use PPC directories. You can advertise in pay per click directories. With PPC you only pay when some one clicks on your link. If no one clicks you pay nothing. This method is very good if you are selling a product at your site. It is easy to assess the cost of each sale and measure you success.

There are lots of PPC sites out there now. Google and Yahoo! are not the only ones. You can often get a better deal at these other sites depending on the competition for the keyword you are using. Shop around. There is probably a site out there with your keyword going cheap. But, Make sure that it can deliver the traffic. You can do this by checking its Alexa rank. If it is not getting much traffic itself, how is it going to direct traffic to you?

4. Give your visitors a free ebook. You could write your own and include an ad in the ebook linking to your site and allow other people to sell it or give it away. If you don't want to take the time to write one, you could ask other writers permission to use their articles and assemble an article eBook. Or commission an eBook. There are plenty of writers around willing to write a fresh eBook for you at a fair price.

5. Hold free online classes or seminars. They could be held in your web site's chat room. The idea of "live" information will entice people to visit your web site. You will become known as an expert on the topic.

6. If you have expertise in a certain area you could offer free consulting to people who visit your web site. You could do this via e-mail or by telephone. People will consider this a huge value because consulting fees can be very expensive. Use a separate business line if you use the phone or you will have calls coming in to your home phone around the clock as the world turns. If your site becomes known for this service you may need to employ people to help keep up. If this happens you can bring in a two tier system whereby you have a free service and a paid service offering something extra.

7. Give visitors a free entry into a contest you are running. The prizes should be something of interest or value to your visitors or relevant to your site's topics. Most people who enter will continually revisit your web site to get the results. Do not be discouraged if the first one or two contests do not set the world on fire. The word has to get out. People will talk to their friends about this site that is running this great contest, and before too long your site will have a name for running contests. There are people out there who really go for that sort of thing and will visit your site regularly.

8. Let visitors download free software. It could be freeware, shareware, demos etc. You could even turn part of your site into a free software area and let other people sell it or give it away from this area. You do not need to produce the free software yourself. There are plenty of sources on the web. All you have to do is link to them. If you gather a significant amount of software of a type relevant to the topic of your site you will make your site a valuable resource for your visitors and they will keep coming back to get more.

9. Offer free online services or utilities from your web site. They could be search engine submitting, copy writing proofreading etc. The service or utility should be helpful to your target audience.

10. Give your visitors a free membership to your online club. People like to feel that they belong to something, why not your online club. You could also give away a free newsletter for club members only. The members will very likely want to contribute a large part of its content making it easy to source articles. If you offer them a link back to their own site your members will be queuing up to put content in your newsletter.

I goes without saying that all of the above should be relevant to the topic of your site in order to be of interest to your visitors. Do not keep changing the topic of your site. I see this happening all too often. The webmaster has a site for three months or so and becomes disheartened because his site not taken off as he hoped, so he decides to try a different topic. Doing so he loses the regular visitors s/he had and has to start at the beginning again in the new topic. Also, the search engines will very likely be slow to change to the new topic, confusing everyone who visits from there. It may also affect the PR of the site as the new topic may initially be viewed as unrelated content.

Selecting A Magazine! Your Conscience Might Influence You

Selecting a magazine can be an interesting thing when you already know what you want. You can either make a choice as to the type of magazine you use depending on your activity or occupation in life. Several types of profession or occupation count in deciding on a magazine. However, for the purpose of this article, I will classify all religious professions as humanitarian. This also includes those that provide counseling and all sorts of moral upbringing. If you are a humanitarian, select a magazine that has the following qualities:

The first point is what do you think or want society to be like? With this in mind, look for magazines that prescribe genuine and acceptable standards in our surroundings, magazines that preach religious messages or that condemns any form of immorality.

Look for periodicals that the advocate equality for all, equality in terms of expression, wealth, gender and that epitomize goodness at all cost. Through this, you become inspired day-by-day to pursue what you desire.

Select a magazine that criticizes society and its leaders, magazines that address social issues directly such as one the passes judgment without fear of favour or repression from a particular public officer. Decide on a magazine that will make you see what society should do in the face of dishonest officers or that which calls to order the breach of public trust held by public trustees.

Think of a publication that sympathizes with your passion on being a good leader. When you read of articles that uplift your spirit, your dreams are directed towards your passion. When your dreams, passions and aspirations reach their apex, actions prop up. Your plan of becoming a leader materializes. You are the architect to better sculpt the society. Do not wait for others to start. Start today by reading those publications which match your thoughts to action.

Do you think that there is no forum for you to put through your views? Then prefer that publication which allow for views or which has an opinion page. This might be the only way for you to speak out to the pubic against an issue of social concern, for example where you can speak out against the oppression of man by man. You cannot claim to be a humanitarian campaigner if you cannot use the opportunity given to you to speak about what you hold.

Seek for publications that will tell you where, when and to whom to make donations to change the lives of others. Permit yourself to be read as having been a mover and shaker of your society. If you begin to walk in a spirited new path, new prospect for humanity will crop up. The humanitarian values that we advocate for will become realities. Rise up and become the person that you think the world needs.

What's The Big Deal Over SEO

Search engine optimization refers to any practice related to the end goal of improving your web site's position in the search engine 'free found listing.' The reason you want all of your web pages, or at least your most important web pages, search engine optimized zeros in on what nearly every website owner wants: More new business contacts generated from Web traffic!

According to current search engine ranking requirements, keywords and content on the same page must match a particular set of criteria. Basically, this means - for example - that for every 500 words on a page, you might only be able to write the same keyword 5 or 6 times to maintain the balance required by search engines. But simply adding the keyword to the body of the page is not the only factor. The page title and description (among others) are also factors. It's obvious that every keyword you have for your site can't be positioned accurately in each relevant place on one page. Each keyword, keyword phrase, or keyword set needs its own page to effectively return web traffic to your site.

Keyword stuffing is a big ouch! Repeating your keyword 30 or 40 times in the content is called keyword stuffing, and it gets your web page penalized or banned altogether from search results. It's just common sense not to engage in keyword stuffing. Limit the number of keywords on each of your web pages, and develop individual web pages for each of your most important keywords.

Requirements and standards change rapidly. At this writing, if the web page is unique and if crawlers determine that the page offers viewers substantive content, it passes the first test for ranking.

It goes something like this. The number of words the public sees on a page is analyzed by search engine robots to determine if there are enough words to be valuable to a web visitor who reads the page. If there are enough words on the visible part of the web page, then the robot evaluates the hidden text (called the source code). It looks for key words, descriptions, web page titles, link content and image descriptions just for starters. If the data qualifies, this invisible web page crawler then compares the overall page content with your entire website to look for a consistent theme. In other words, you can't publish a page about your cat on a site that sells chess sets without breaking the consistent theme rule. Every website must have a consistent theme weaved in and out every web page.

If the web pages pass this evaluation, the robot zips on to calculate all the data in various formats. For example, are there too many keywords on the page as compared to the total number of words on the web page? A comparison of image descriptions and link content also plays a roll. Once all of the various calculations are complete - and this all happens in seconds - the calculated percent of substance is compared to all the other website pages on the Internet asking for the same keyword status. Then the robot determines web page ranking position to be displayed in the search engine 'free found listing' when that one key word is used by a web searcher.

It is easy to see why search engine optimizing web pages is a complex, labor-intensive task that requires up-to-date knowledge of search engine standards and requirements, skill in applying the words to comply as closely as possible with top ranking position, and common sense so as to not go overboard (keyword stuffing a page) getting that web page penalized or banned altogether.

Pages that use acceptable standards applicable for each search engine are rewarded in time with a valuable ranking. A top ranking has many benefits for your business, from visibility, free clicks and web traffic to increased sales revenue.

The bottom line is to publish web pages that meet search requirements so visitors can find your page. If it is too time consuming for you to successfully optimize the content on your web site, or if your search engine ranking appears buried on page 99 of the free found listing, you may want to consider a professional SEO service provider. Start by asking an experienced search optimization writer to review 3 or 4 of your existing web pages. Listen to her suggestions and apply them. If budget is limited, engage her services to only optimize your most important web pages. Track results over the following 90 - 120 days.

Domain Name Relevance - WWW?

Your domain name is the internet address for your unique place on the web, thus undeniably important. It creates your identify and allows you to have an internet presence, whether you are just telling the world who you are or trying to sell a product or service. IP (Internet Protocol) addresses are strings of numbers separated by dots and, although every computer on the internet has one, would be very difficult to remember. Domain names make internet communication much easier.

But domain names are especially important considerations for successful eCommerce. A name that is easy to remember, and easy to spell, can make the difference between a compelling presence on the internet and wandering around in the fog of cyberspace. Domain names are as important to the eCommerce entrepreneur as store names were to Mom and Pop Shops a century ago. They are descriptive labels that tell the shopper what to expect on the site.

Domain names need to relate to the product or service you offer. For obvious reasons, domain names that don’t apply to content have absolutely no value to the company. In fact, they can effectively shut down the cyber-shopper from considering any future business with you. Descriptive domain names draw surfers who are just ‘window shopping’ and you have a greater chance of converting them into buyers. Other eCommerce business will develop back-links to your site more readily if they can recognize you from your domain name.

Domain names, if appropriately descriptive about your service or product, are an effective branding tool. You want every shopper in the world to know about your content, and to think about you when your industry is mentioned. Branding is the way that global symbol is created. A domain name describing your business reinforces your brand and makes it easier for shoppers to remember you and return to shop on your site.

Probably most important, domain names evoke a sense of professionalism and credibility for eCommerce. Getting Sucked Into Social Networking

Social networking began with Classmates.com in 1995. This site’s goal is to help its members find, connect, keep in touch, and form a network with friends and acquaintances from preschool through college, from work, or from the military.

Unlike other networking sites that gained popularity in recent years, Classmates.com uses real names instead of screen names. It also has a rigid privacy policy - the contact information of the member is never revealed within the network unless disclosed one on one by the account owner to another member.

Another social network, SixDegrees.com, emerged in 1997. SixDegrees allows its users to send messages or post bulletins to a list of friends or family members found within their network. SixDegrees faced its early demise four years later, just as the Friendster online community was starting to flourish.

With Friendster, you can invite and add as many friends as you want. You can also upload photos, write blogs and reviews, instant-message other members from your network, and form online groups with those who share the same interests as you have.

At present, Friendster’s social network has more than 40 million registered users. Until around April 2004, Friendster was on the top lead among dozens of other social networking sites. MySpace overtook Friendster in terms of page views, and many other social networking sites like Multiply and Hi5.

MySpace is one of the most popular websites in the Internet these days. Just like Friendster, it allows you to collect a network of friends and share blogs, photos, music, and videos with them. This social networking website is very much popular on English speaking countries, while most people from Asia prefer to use Friendster. MySpace already has more than a hundred million members in 2006.

The two major search engines, Google and Yahoo!, have launched their own social networking sites - orkut and Yahoo! 360°. Most blogging sites also allow you to create a network of friends online.

The thing is, most social networking sites work similarly – they all allow users to expand their network by inviting friends or acquaintances and to share information over the Internet. When you post blogs or files in your account, everyone from your network of friends will be informed of the update through RSS feeds. You also have the option to keep a particular post private to just a few individuals in your network.

Social networks are the best way to increase the number of people in which you are connected with, so if you are into business, you might as well get yourself into social networking to promote your product and increase your sales.

You can choose from hundreds social networking websites available in the web today. However, you might prefer to use a particular networking site in which a lot of your personal friends and contacts are already members. In this way, it’s much easier for you to expand your network and share the contents of your site to other users.

What You Don't Know About Natural Search Engine Optimization Will Hurt You

With almost 85% of Internet users accessing search engines to find products and services, according to a top Arizona SEO Company, web sites that do not have a natural search engine optimization plan that gets them a Top 10 search engine ranking are missing out on a lot of business.

Unfortunately, that fact has led to a lot of fly-by-night search engine optimization companies who are promising the moon and the stars for search engine ranking results that they can't possible obtain.

These online marketing rip-off artists offer so-called search engine optimization "packages" that are based upon faulty logic and dishonest practices that usually end up getting their client's sites banned for life by any respectable search engine.

It is possible to gain a Top 10 search engine ranking, but never "overnight", using what is known as natural search engine optimization.

Online marketing companies that offer natural search engine optimization services utilize a combination of proven, legal techniques that help a web site rank high in the natural or "organic" search engine listings that are generated by search engine spiders that "crawl" a web site looking for keyword-rich content and properly formatted pages.

When natural search engine optimization rules are followed, the web site gradually increases its rank and appears higher in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). The end result is often a Top 10 ranking that the site received naturally and without paying thousands of dollars to buy key word placement.

Natural search engine optimization services are the only SEO options that won't get a web site banned for using dirty tricks, and they are the only SEO services you should consider if you want to stay in the sales game for the long run.

Of course, search engine optimization is only half the battle. All the traffic in the world won't do you any good if some of it doesn't convert to sales.

But honestly, the sales conversion process is a lot easier to fine-tune than search engine optimization is unless you know exactly what you're doing.

Web site owners are cautioned against trying to perform natural search engine optimization techniques themselves, because all it takes is one or two small errors to cause your site to fall to the bottom of the listings. And that will cost you more money than you saved by doing search engine optimization yourself.
