Improved Page Engine Rank and SEO for Beginners and the More Experienced

Improved page engine rank is a term used by those with a confusion with SEO and page optimization and Google Page Rank – properly PageRank by the way. It is a trade marked term registered by Google, although the patent for the PageRank system of calculating and assigning it is assigned to Stanford University where Page developed the system, not Google.

What most people do not know is that the term PageRank originates from the name of one of the developers, Larry Page. Hence Page Rank. He later teamed up with Sergey Brin to form Google in 1998.

Enough of history: that is in the past! The present is that Google PageRank that I will henceforth refer to as Page Rank for fear of breaking copyright law, has been publicly stated by Google as being one of the predominant means of determining the listing of a website for a particular search term. This might not last for a lot longer, since there are whispers that Google are considering reducing the importance of Page Rank in view of the increasing relevance of social bookmarking and other social sites such as Del.icio.us and Digg.

Now there is Twitter run by Google, and more and more Twitter results are turning up in Google search results. Twitter is what is called a micro-blogging service that uses SMS and instant messaging, or the blog posts on the Twitter website. Facebook is also being used by more and more people, but a lot are college students and others trying to spy on and stalk ex lovers for what can only be assumed to be pretty nefarious reasons.

However, these uses of so called social networking sites are immaterial. It their existence that matters, and the association many of them have with major search engines that are producing so many search results somewhat less than useful when they should properly have been filtered out. The question is: Should Google and Yahoo be allowed to be associated with these sites and give them preference in search engine results by use of what can only be manipulation of the algorithms?

Perhaps Page Rank and Link Density will become less important than your registration and participation in these sites. That is why I have joined most of them. They are fun to participate in, but much of the content is very juvenile and amateurish and not what I would to find in a serious search. Blog postings are generally not useful content.

However, back to link density and Page Rank. It is highly unlikely that link density will ever be dropped by Google, but they might introduce some aspects of social bookmarking in to their algorithm. What this means is that if you want to improve your listing, you will have to be involved in Google related social sites, Twitter being the main one at the moment.

If you understand Twitter you will know what I mean when I state that Google might include, in addition to page rank and traditional SEO, the number of friends and comments, number of Twitter followers, photo uploads and frequency of updates. Keep an eye on Google activity and their acquisitions, since the more acquisitions of social sites Google make, and the more of their own they produce, then you can be pretty sure that at some time they will introduce elements of that into their algorithms.

So, get ahead of the race and get acquainted with Twitter. Google have made no changes yet, but the buzz is there, so don’t bet your boots that no changes will be made in that direction sometime in the future. My belief is that article submission will remain the one major means of attracting traffic and obtaining one-way links back to your selected web pages for the foreseeable future, but that elements of social bookmarking and other social networking sites will gradually creep into the algorithms.

There is nothing to lose by being ahead in the game, and you have just been given a clue as to how to do that. It might be a year away, perhaps less and perhaps more, but when the day comes, if it does, I at least will be prepared for it.

Your Key To High Search Engine Placement: Links

One thing has become abundantly clear in today's Internet: you need to place well in the search engines if you want to succeed with your online business. Every search engine ranks pages based on slightly different criteria, but one that is consistently critical is the number of incoming links lead to your page.

Google especially focused its original algorithms on these links. Their idea was that if your page has lots of incoming links from pages in or related to your keyword topic, and if those links originated from good or prestigious pages, this was an indicator that your page was likely to hold the information that their search engine customers were seeking. Rankings were based on the number of incoming links a given page had.

Today, Google works on the same concept, but they've grown increasingly sophisticated to serve their customers better. For instance, when affiliate marketers figured out that Google was using linking to drive search engine placement, they started building automated link-generating sites that cross-referenced one another through complex linking arrays. This quickly became known as search engine spam.

How Can You Use Links?

First, never spam Google. They may blackball all your sites and your name if they think you've done something contrary to their terms of use. Instead, focus on how you can get good quality links from other pages to your website.

Great Content: Great content, once the word gets out, will always draw links from other sites to you. If you have a fantastic tool or resource to share, putting it online can draw links and ultimately traffic.

Links From Directories: Yahoo! and Dmoz are well-known directory sites; instead of cataloging pages via web spiders, these directories have you or an editor place your site into an appropriate category, from which your link will emerge. Always register your site with directories yourself so you can select a category appropriate to your keywords. Don't overlook niche directories, either; whether your website is focused on pets or datachips, there are small specialized directories out there you can register with. Note: register with free directories first, and when you see where your site's going to fall in the search engine you can start looking at the paid ones.

Links from Related Forums: If you post in a forum related to your website topic, always include a link back to your website; the spiders pick up these links and, when they're from related forums, it will boost your website's ranking.

Reciprocal Links: Historically, these have been great, a sort of tit-for-tat web marketing scheme. Lately, after the latest update on Google , they've been reduce in importance, though they are still valuable.

Article Sites: There are numerous websites that distribute free donated articles written by experts. If you write good articles, you can contribute articles to these sites. The benefit? Each article is printed on content-rich sites with a resource box that has your name and a link to your website in it. This provides you with an automatic one-way link from a quality site.

Blogs: Blogs are a little different, in that they don't necessarily give you one-way links. What they do is provide your site with continually fresh content – an online commodity that the search engines love. With good one-way links and fresh content, you can raise your search engine rankings quickly.

Search Engine Optimization And Reciprocal Linking

Search Engine Optimization

I believe linking is dead!

Google do not count your links like they used too, fact!

I make this claim from personal experience. My website used to have many back links from other websites, now Google only list 19 and some of these are internal links.

I get at least 50 web site owners, or designers a week, asking for a link to their site from mine. Me being the affable chap that I am I usually give them a link. I do however expect one in return, fair enough you might say. If that is the case and all these websites link to mine where the are they?

Yahoo show my links to be 1,735 sites linking to me. I know, some will be internal links.

MSN show me as having 877.

Great you might think, so why do Google only show 19. I know I have many well ranked links coming from relevant sites in the same field as my own site, but the Google does not see them as relevant. Why I ask?

Are Google now discounting links that have been there for some time? EG. aged links.

Are Google discounting all reciprocal links?

Do links only count if you don't link to them? E.G. one way links. If so how does one get links from well ranked sites?

Well I can probably answer that, you are expected to buy them.

Therefore Google have created another spin off business for certain people in the world. I don't agree with buying links, people should rate your site well enough to link to you. If you have a rubbish website and can buy links to improve your ranking then the whole thing stinks. I have never purchased links, in fact I have never even asked anyone for a link. The only way I get links is by people asking me.

The little guy on the web has little chance of getting a high ranking in Google.

When I first put my website together Google gave me a PR6, this was before they had things like the sandbox. I had very few, if any, sites linking to mine, I was a newbie on the web, not to my business I might add. I used to work for another company doing SEO but thought why am I working for someone else, and set up on my own. However I digress, my point being I had few links and Google and all the other search engines ranked my site highly. I know good content and all that, but about a year ago I went down to a PR5 with lots of links, get the picture. Now from Google my site is only a PR4. There seems to be no logic at all to Google, which is probably what they are striving for.

For some of my search phrases I get position one from 20,000,000 pages but I have not even optimised for those phrases. With no links going to that page. It is starting to appear that the more you optimise the worse it gets. The more links you have the worse it gets.

Whereas everyone in my industry, and at Google, says linking is one of the most important things, I genuinely do not believe this is the case anymore unless you can get links from very high PR sites. They are somehow filtering out the links, even relevant ones.

I know I have some irrelevant links coming to and from my website but I just like to help other website owners. It takes me a couple of hours a week to add other peoples links to my site and I wondering if it is all worth it anymore. Why should I spend my valuable time putting links on my site, emailing people to say where their link is all for Google to discount them. So from now I am no longer adding anymore links from my site.

The Changing Face of Search Engine Optimization

With the ever evolving internet market for just about anything you can imagine and Google’s index growing to almost 9 billion pages, and counting, there is little dispute amongst search engine optimizers that our job is getting much harder. From linking to articles, and density to ontology, our industry changes as fast as any other. The search engines, especially Google, seem to be on a daily diet of change and their algorithm seems to be growing at the rate of their index.

The word ‘related’ plays a much bigger part in SEO today than it ever has in the past. Instead of targeting an exact keyword phrase, it now makes a lot more sense to keep your site within context and to have related words to your keywords, compared to having density of one keyword phrase. Linking has also turned into a frenzy for relevancy. Unrelated links seem to no longer carry much weight at all. The theme through all of Google’s recent changes seems to come down to one cliché: quality over quantity.

Just like with any other update at Google, optimizers must search and research their profession, however it seems to be happening more often than ever. You can’t walk through our office without hearing Google’s name a thousand times. We have unofficial RND (research and development) meetings almost every hour as there seems to constantly be new ideas and theories popping into all of our heads. In the past there were always changes to the way we’ve done our work, but the pace of this change is accelerating rapidly as well as the competition for online searchers.

MSN seems to be creating a buzz and they’ve just recently started a national television ad campaign. Their search results resemble Google’s of 6 months ago, a time that will go down in SEO history as “the good old days”, and also a time that Google’s SERPs seemed a lot more relevant than they do today. New search engines seem to be popping up all over the place, and after all, wasn’t Google a virtual unknown 5 years ago?

One of the best points made to me over the past month came at the preview of the new become.com search engine in California, where founder Michael Yang decreed this to be only the very beginning in the history of online search. Whatever happens in Google’s future, and the future of online search, there is one thing for certain: only the most intelligent and innovative of SEO companies are going to stay above the bar and continue to find ways to get their clients, and themselves, to the top.

Your Link Building Campaign Search for Quality or Search for Quantity?

If you’re new to internet marketing, one tip you may have heard around the internet is that quantity link building is a better campaign than quality link building. However, if you’ve been around the internet awhile you know that a good link building campaign is just the opposite. While it is important to get a good number of links pointing back to you, the quality of the link pointing back is much more vital.

The way to look at it is that a link is like a reference to your website. If you were collecting references for another job, would you try to collect 25 good references or a few really good references? It’s the same thing for your link building campaign. You want nothing but the best pointing back to your website.

Not only is it a waste of your time to get as many links as possible as oppose to focusing on quality link building, it can also be detrimental to your website. If you have hundreds of links of little value pointing to your website, the search engines may view your website as one with little value. Obviously there are a number of other considerations that search engines take into account, but the links pointing back to your website is certainly one of the criteria.

So how do you know if it is a quality link or not? There are a number of factors that you should take into consideration when starting your link building campaign. One of the most common factors is the link’s page rank. This is a great way to look for quality links because their page is ranked from the search engines. However, you want to look at the page rank of the page that your website will be on, not their home page. It does you no good to look at the page rank of their home page if your link will have no association to it.

Another consideration is how many links are already on the other person’s page. Most people set up a page specifically for links to other websites. It can be difficult at times, but during your link building campaigns you should try to find websites that have no more than 30 links on the page. The page rank for any given page is distributed among the number of links on the page. If you can find a page with 30 other links on it, you will receive 1/30th of the page rank for that page.

The last thing to consider during your link building campaign is whether you like the website or not. Just because a website doesn’t have the highest page rank doesn’t automatically make it a poor website. For all you know it could be a brand new website that will soon have a page rank of 6. The important thing is that you go with your gut instinct and base your link building campaign around quality links and not the quantity of links.

What's The Big Deal Over SEO

Search engine optimization refers to any practice related to the end goal of improving your web site's position in the search engine 'free found listing.' The reason you want all of your web pages, or at least your most important web pages, search engine optimized zeros in on what nearly every website owner wants: More new business contacts generated from Web traffic!

According to current search engine ranking requirements, keywords and content on the same page must match a particular set of criteria. Basically, this means - for example - that for every 500 words on a page, you might only be able to write the same keyword 5 or 6 times to maintain the balance required by search engines. But simply adding the keyword to the body of the page is not the only factor. The page title and description (among others) are also factors. It's obvious that every keyword you have for your site can't be positioned accurately in each relevant place on one page. Each keyword, keyword phrase, or keyword set needs its own page to effectively return web traffic to your site.

Keyword stuffing is a big ouch! Repeating your keyword 30 or 40 times in the content is called keyword stuffing, and it gets your web page penalized or banned altogether from search results. It's just common sense not to engage in keyword stuffing. Limit the number of keywords on each of your web pages, and develop individual web pages for each of your most important keywords.

Requirements and standards change rapidly. At this writing, if the web page is unique and if crawlers determine that the page offers viewers substantive content, it passes the first test for ranking.

It goes something like this. The number of words the public sees on a page is analyzed by search engine robots to determine if there are enough words to be valuable to a web visitor who reads the page. If there are enough words on the visible part of the web page, then the robot evaluates the hidden text (called the source code). It looks for key words, descriptions, web page titles, link content and image descriptions just for starters. If the data qualifies, this invisible web page crawler then compares the overall page content with your entire website to look for a consistent theme. In other words, you can't publish a page about your cat on a site that sells chess sets without breaking the consistent theme rule. Every website must have a consistent theme weaved in and out every web page.

If the web pages pass this evaluation, the robot zips on to calculate all the data in various formats. For example, are there too many keywords on the page as compared to the total number of words on the web page? A comparison of image descriptions and link content also plays a roll. Once all of the various calculations are complete - and this all happens in seconds - the calculated percent of substance is compared to all the other website pages on the Internet asking for the same keyword status. Then the robot determines web page ranking position to be displayed in the search engine 'free found listing' when that one key word is used by a web searcher.

It is easy to see why search engine optimizing web pages is a complex, labor-intensive task that requires up-to-date knowledge of search engine standards and requirements, skill in applying the words to comply as closely as possible with top ranking position, and common sense so as to not go overboard (keyword stuffing a page) getting that web page penalized or banned altogether.

Pages that use acceptable standards applicable for each search engine are rewarded in time with a valuable ranking. A top ranking has many benefits for your business, from visibility, free clicks and web traffic to increased sales revenue.

The bottom line is to publish web pages that meet search requirements so visitors can find your page. If it is too time consuming for you to successfully optimize the content on your web site, or if your search engine ranking appears buried on page 99 of the free found listing, you may want to consider a professional SEO service provider. Start by asking an experienced search optimization writer to review 3 or 4 of your existing web pages. Listen to her suggestions and apply them. If budget is limited, engage her services to only optimize your most important web pages. Track results over the following 90 - 120 days.
